Sunday, May 1st marked the first day of summer. Well, that is if you follow the Celtic calendar. Beltane is an old Gaelic holiday and, like most, calls for a big celebration. Of course, in the Western world people tend to celebrate May Day with parades, may poles and a May Queen. As far as I know there weren’t any May Day celebrations in Skidegate this year. The closest thing we’ll get to a May Pole this year is the pole raising on May 21st for Sid Crosby. I’m really excited that I can share this event with my Mom and sister who will be arriving in six more sleeps!
Noora is also very excited and has started saying “Nana” (as well as “Nuni”). She’ll be able to show off her Queen wave. And no, I did not teach it to her and she was doing it long before the Royal Wedding last week, I swear! She will also get to show off Nannie at Mother Goose that’s happening at the Skidegate Health Center on Wednesdays from 1-2:30 pm. There has been a great turnout so far. Come and join us for snacks and singing!
Also, for babies 0-10 months old, there are Infant Massage sessions being held in the Headstart section of the Skidegate Daycare on Tuesdays at 2pm. I wish Noora was young enough, but alas, she’s 15 months now!
I haven’t attended many events this past week because we’ve been packing, cleaning and moving. Brenda tells me there’s an old rivalry between those on Front Street and those “across the river”. Well, we’ve moved across the ball field/river so I hope there are no hard feelings when we pass through Front Street now. I figure we’re safe as long as we have the kid (she’s neutral territory, haha).
There are lots of upcoming events to attend in Skidegate, and I hope to be there even though there is a lot of unpacking to do. If you’re doing some spring cleaning, or moving like we just did, and you happen upon some items you do not need, please drop them off at the Charlotte Community Hall on May 14th for the Senbazuru of Hope garage sale anytime after 9:15am. The sale, itself, happens from 10am – 3pm. All proceeds from Senbazuru activities will go to the Lions Club Relief Fund for Japan. You can also drop off unwanted pop cans at the temporary recycling area outside the hall. And while you’re there, why not fold some cranes! Get a sponsor for each crane you fold and send your wishes and donations to Japan. There will also be some Japanese 101 lessons, quizzes, and a Japanese movie. Bring the whole family and have some fun for a great cause. If you or your organization would like to volunteer at the event, call Beng at 559-8398.
On Sunday May 15th there is a Charcoal Illustration Workshop with Chris Auchter at the Bill Reid Teaching Centre from 1-5pm for youth ages 12-15. The fee is $40 and includes an Art Starter Kit and art paper. Chris Auchter is a well-known animator and illustrator from Skidegate and will help you create a masterpiece to show off at the Art Show on May 19th. Call 559-8398 or email bfavreau@thehub.literacy.bc.ca to register.
If writing is more your thing, like me, there is a Writing Workshop with Richard van Camp on May 17th from 6:30pm – 8:30pm at Northwest Community College for adults. The fee is $40. He is a well-known Dogrib Nation writer and storyteller from Fort Smith, NWT. See above for registration info.
Happy Mother’s Day (that’s May 9th, Dads and kids – mark it down and make her happy!). hC
