Happy Saint Patrick's Day, everyone! I am not sure if the holiday is celebrated here quite like it
is in Nova Scotia, but the Sk'aadgaa Naay Elementary School held their own celebration on
Wednesday March 16. I don't believe any leprechauns made an appearance, however, there was a
tribute to Justin Bieber and Mr. Whal serenaded the crowd, as well. I celebrated the Patron Saint of
Ireland with food and a song. I'm not sure why I feel compelled to celebrate this day, as I have
Scottish roots, not Irish, but who cares. Beannachtai na Féile Pádraig oraibh!
In other not-so-fun news, I was informed last Sunday that the crack in the church window was
not an accident. More than thirty years after the coloured glass window was carried from the previous
church to its' new home where it has been resting without trouble, it has been vandalized by a group of
kids. The police responded to several incidents of vandalism in the area around the same time, but
cannot lay charges as the kids are 12 years of age and under. Is there really nothing for our kids to do
other than damage their neighbours' property? I hope this sparks some discussion in the community
and new programs and activities for our youth.
There was a Three Year Old Fair for parents and children held today, March 17 from 9:30 am –
12:30 pm at the Skidegate Health Center. There were door prizes, books given to the children, and
access to hearing, speech & language tests, and motor skills assessments.
Also, for those of you who missed out in November, Dr. Ahmed will be taking appointments
from March 29 – April 1 for all of your optometry needs. Please call the Health Centre at 559-4610 to
reserve your place.
If you're getting excited about spring but your body is a bit too rusty to get digging in the
garden, cleaning out the attic, or other “Springy” things, you may be interested in attending the free
Chronic Pain Self-Management workshops being held at the clinic in Charlotte on Thursdays. The
program runs from March 24 – April 28, 1 – 3:30pm and you can call 1-866-902-3767 to register.
And once you're feeling a bit better, you may want to check out the Health Fair being held in
Old Masset on April 7th from 3 – 6pm. You can call the Health Centre for more details but it is sure to
be informative (and fun).
I shared the ferry to Sandspit with a group of eager high school students and their chaperones
on their way to Europe last week. Unfortunately, I received the message halfway to Sandspit via
Facebook message relayed by Sue Brown, that Willie's flight had been canceled. Again. C'mon, now.
Enough of the delayed travels! The group to Europe had to wait as well, but are now safely on the
other side of the world and having a wonderful time. Enjoy!
Kayaking has also been canceled due to the weather lately, but we will be back on the water
this week, fingers crossed. The SunRun die-hards were out last Sunday in the chilly rainstorm, armed
with gum boots and long johns, and are now on the home stretch of our training. Good luck!
And last but not least, more birthdays to celebrate this week. Lauren (Todd) Brown celebrated
on March 8th and Reese Burton celebrated his 8th birthday on March 13. A very Happy 1st Birthday
goes to Mason Jones on March 14, and Leah Walker will celebrate hers on March 22. Have a great
