Skidegate Socialite for June 16

Do you ever feel as if you just put your feet up to relax after a busy week and BOOM! It’s Monday again. It’s happening alot lately. I’m pretty sure I promised myself this weekend I would not do a thing, but instead, I cleaned, cooked, and mastered Swiss Meringue Buttercream icing. How did it taste? Well, ask anyone who attended the anniversary service at Skidegate United Church this past Sunday! The cake, also an experiment, was a hit and I’m sure I’ll be getting more requests in the future.
Just a head’s up, next Sunday Willie & I will be tackling the church service as Nancy O’Higgins will be up to her eyeballs in textbooks at AST in Halifax. Oh, the joys of being a student (although I am a bit jealous, I secretly loved doing research papers!). The last Sunday in June, we’ll be meeting at the Crow’s Nest for lunch, and then no services for the month of July! Hmm, now what will I do to fill my Sundays? I’m sure I’ll find something. Sleep, maybe? Ha!
No one better complain of boredom this week/weekend. On Friday, June 17th there will be a Diabetes Discussion Group meeting at the Medical Clinic in Charlotte. Please call Donna Duffy at 559-8477 for registration and more information. Also, Friday evening, Tracy Hageman will be holding a Sidewalk Sale in front of her consignment shop in Skidegate where there will be lots of great deals for men, women and kids!  You’ll have lots of time to browse, from 6-9pm, but get there early or you’ll miss all of the good stuff! Maybe you’ll even find something to wear to the Hospital Day Dance!
Hospital Day is happening the next day, June 18th, kicking off at 8am at the QC Hall with a delicious breakfast served up by the QC Fire Department. The parade will start at 10am from the hospital and lead the masses straight to all of the fun, including BBQ’d goodies, cotton candy, popcorn, lunch and dinner in the hall, games for all and live entertainment. Come and celebrate 103 years of Hospital Days. The dance, which I’m told is the dance to attend, will follow in the evening!
Just as some things are starting up for the summer season, some are winding down. Mother Goose will finish at the Skidegate Health Center on June 22nd, 1-2:30pm. Haida Grad happened on June 9th, and by what I’ve heard, it was a beautiful evening. And Strengthening Families will be wrapping up with a graduation evening, Monday June 27th (same place and time, now that the Canucks are done!).  Hawa’a to everyone who attended and made our first SFP a success, and to all who have helped out in any way. We hope to do another session soon!
Oh, and please mark your calendars for the Two Brothers Pole Farewell celebration in New Town, Massett on June 21st (National Aboriginal Day). This pole has been 80% carved by Gwaii and Jaalen Edenshaw, and will be sent to Jasper National Park to be completed by a carver-in-residence this summer. Once finished, there will be a pole raising ceremony July 16th in Jasper.  There will be pole interpretations, storytelling, and the launch of “The Two Brothers: A Haida Story”, featuring illustrations by Gwaii Edenshaw. The story was told to Gwaii and Jaalen by Diane Brown, who was told by Hazel Stevens. Come check it out from 3-6pm.
And last but not least, Happy Birthday to Lila Ridley (June 11th), to Kayden Collinson who turned 4 on June 12th and to Roy Jones Jr (June 12th).
