Skidegate Socialite for March 24

I've said it before and I will say it again; Spring is here! This weekend it became official. WHALES! Had I gone kayaking like I planned to, I would have seen them firsthand, but instead, I napped with Noora and heard the news from Bev Yovanovich after. There were humpbacks and killer whales around Skyaas! I was so disappointed because I have been waiting, not so patiently, for them to arrive. However, Sunday evening while visiting Nuni Pat, I did spot a humpback lolling around the inlet. So exciting!
So, if the whales and the Canadian geese everywhere don't seem spring-y enough, take the number of people out enjoying the sun as proof. On Sunday afternoon while hanging out at the lookout by Jags Beanstalk, I saw two roller-bladers, three cyclists, five walkers, and many “Sunday drivers”. There were only a few of us at SunRun training, but we met a few other early-birds along the way. As Sue Gladstone said, everyone is coming out of hibernation now. (If you haven't been training with us, you can still join in the fun on the actual day. Mark your calendars for April 17 and challenge yourself to the 10K walk or run, or just come cheer us on.) Noora enjoyed all the time we spent outdoors, and it even stayed warm and sunny in Old Masset while we were there! Yup, spring is here to stay! Time to head to the Laughing Moon Nursery for your seeds and supplies and get your gardens started!
On our way to Masset on March 19th, we happened to stop at the Crows Nest in Tlell for coffee-to-go, blissfully unaware it happened to be its' grand re-opening. Well, quite a few villagers were there enjoying the food when we arrived, and many more familiar faces popped in as we sat down to eat local Bratwurst sausages and slurp up delicious ice-cream while Noora danced in the booth to the one-man guitar & harmonica band.
Stop! Are you squinting as you read this? Or are you holding the paper at arm's length? Things a bit fuzzy? Well, if you answered yes to any of these questions, it's not too late to book your appointment with Dr. Ahmed, your occasional neighborhood optometrist. He will be here March 29 – April 1. Please call the Health Center at 559-4610.
It’s also not too late to register for the Chronic Pain Self-Management clinic starting March 24th continuing each Thursday afternoon until April 28th. The program takes place in Charlotte from 1 – 3:30 pm. Call  1-866-902-3767 for details and registration.
Another health related issue: please be careful when/if you brave the slippery rocks along the coast in the quest for sgyuu (seaweed). Unfortunately, Kim Goetzinger injured her wrist doing this very thing. Ouch! I wish her a speedy recovery and hope no one else follows in her footsteps.
I also send best wishes to the family of Doug Crosby who marked the anniversary of his passing with the community as they moved his headstone to its’ final resting place on Sunday March 20th.
And ending on a happy note, for those who haven't heard, Kane Trevor Jones made his debut appearance in Prince Rupert on March 15th, weighing in at a sturdy 8lbs 14oz. Congrats Jay and Tiffany Jones. Also, Auntie Mary-ann Wilson celebrated her birthday with family and friends on March 16th.
Have a great week everyone, and remember, if you have an event coming up or would like to send a birthday greeting or just have some news to pass along, please email me at whiteravenreturns@gmail.com.
