I just saw the weather forecast for the upcoming week and they say we're in for a big snowstorm! Are you kidding me, Michael Kuss, trusted CTV-BC meteorologist? It's April! Time to be planting flowers and veggies and dancing around in the warm sunshine. Snowstorm? Really? Whoa – take a deep breath, everyone – April Fool's. Yes, it's that time of year again. Please, be kind to one another when it comes to the tricks of the day.
This has been another busy week in this village that never seems to sleep (need proof? Drive by the Homemakers building at 4am on a Bingo night!). I did not make it to many events due to a persistent sinus cold, but I did keep tabs on a few things of interest.
The Haida Gwaii Film Festival followed through on its' objectives of “showcas[ing] films and videos of a myriad of genres...engag[ing] communities in dialogue around filmmaking and visuality...[and inspiring] youth to participate in and understand the schematics of filmmaking and video.” I have heard mixed opinions on the films but overall, I think everyone had a great time. Hawa'a to all of those who made this event possible.
Also, if you haven't already, go check out the great local artwork being shown in the Kaay until the end of April. I had a sneak preview of a beautiful painting by Debby Gardiner before the show – you won't be disappointed.
In basketball news, the junior Saints along with coaches Desi Collison and Duane Alsop, battled their way through the Junior All Native Tournament in Penticton this past week. They played well but lost to Homiss in the end. Keep up the hard work and you'll take home the trophy next year.
If anyone is looking for a career change, or advice on beginning your own business, there will be a Career Fair at the QC Community Hall on April 6th. The RCMP Aboriginal Recruitment official will be in attendance, and she will also be holding entry exams at the Charlotte detachment on April 5th at 5pm. You must pre-register and can do so by contacting CPL Dee Stewart at (604) 992-3913 or 000057453@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
The Ngystle Society is looking for families with children ages 6-12 who would be like to participate in their Strengthening Families Program. The program will run Monday evenings with a free meal, followed by discussion groups for adults and the children touching on topics such as stress-management, parent/child attachment and family relations, substance-dependence and its effects, behavioral problems and communication skills. Contact Waneeta at 559-4114 for more information or to get your name on the list.
You all remember the lovely, colourful and quirky Margaret Atwood? Well, we will be viewing her documentary, In the Wake of the Flood, at Skidegate United Church on the big screen April 8. All are welcome, even if you haven't yet read The Year of the Flood. Maybe you'll find your inspiration there.
If you feel like an afternoon drive on April 9th, why not head to the Seniors room in the Port Clements multiplex. They are holding a Spring Fling Tea, complete with tea, sandwiches and sweets, from 1 – 3:30pm. Take some extra change as there will be a loonie auction and bake sale, too.
And lastly, the birthdays. Happy 13th birthday to Alix Goetzinger on March 27. A very happy 75th to our sometimes-resident, David Suzuki on March 24th. Kristy Alsop celebrated hers on March 30. James Williams turns the big 3-0 on April 3 and Pam Hill and Tanya Alton share their special day on April 6.
