Skidegate Socialite for April 14

Wow. Where is the pause button? I need a breather, a day off, a little me time to read a book, clean the house, heck, I’d love to just sit and stare at the wall for an hour! What is it about spring that takes our lives from a slow, comfortable idle to a stressful never-ending high-speed chase? I need to do some yoga or meditation to balance out the chaos – nah, scrap that, I don’t have the time.
Speaking of meditation, I have been spending a lot my time at the Ngystle Society lately, but instead of taking advantage of the Amethyst mat, or a relaxing massage, I have been involved in planning meetings for Hltalga, our new Strengthening Families Program. We began the 14-week program at the Skidegate Early Childhood Center April 11 with dinner and followed with a great first session. I will keep you posted on this as the weeks go by. Hopefully will help bring families closer together and break negative cycles that have been affecting this community in the past. A big Hawa’a to everyone involved!
If you made it to the Skidegate Band Council “Amazing” Open House on April 8, you would have seen this and many, many other programs and organizations promoted at the George Brown Rec. Center. The place was packed with colourful displays, exciting prizes, and of course, wonderful community members. The most exciting part of the night for me, however, was the return of a dish I thought had been lost, like so many others, in the kitchen. Thank you so much to Jenny Pearson for the rescue!
We hosted some special guests this past week. Ken and Addie Pryce were home visiting their Aunt, Bea Harley. Ken is a Senior Officer for Health Facilities & Capital Programs, and his wife is the Director of Inuit Health Services in Ottawa. Also spotted in Skidegate: Jerry McIntyre. This wonderful vet from Cranbrook has been visiting friends and family, and trying to get in a bit of fishing in between hail storms. Welcome to any others visiting in the community. If you wish to welcome anyone or have any other news, please email me at whiteravenreturns@gmail.com.
I will be slightly less busy after this Sunday, April 17. We will be wrapping up our Sun Run training with the final 10K Walk/Run from Balance Rock to Kaay Llnagaay. Registration will begin at 9:30am; the race (hopefully sans blisters) begins at 10am. All are welcome! Thank you to Sue and Robin for helping us prepare our muscles and our minds for the journey.
I would like to say Hawa’a to Moony Pearson for keeping Skidegate sparkling. He cleaned up the mess ravens made of my garbage faux-pas when we first moved to the heights and he can be seen picking garbage, trimming grass and other general tidying. Thank you!
There will be an Edible Seaweed Presentation at Kaay Llnagaay on April 18th at 7pm. Don’t let the recent “no drinking” warning for rainwater in Old Masset scare you off. There may be some radiation in seaweed but that’s no reason to give it the cold (slimy) shoulder. Just make sure you’re not going to have a shower and dental x-ray on the same day you do a taste test!
And last but not least, a very Happy Birthday to Thomas Hans who celebrated his 87th birthday at SBC Open House April 8th. Also, a happy birthday goes to Guujaaw who celebrated his on April 7th. Desiree Wilson celebrates on April 12th, Kat Sanderson on April 14th, and Duane Alsop on April 15th.
